How long can one walk after removing the intramedullary nail from a femoral shaft fracture

The recovery process of femoral shaft fracture after intramedullary nail removal can be roughly divided into the following stages:
1. The first two weeks after surgery are mainly for wound healing. During this period, it is recommended to use crutches to assist walking and ensure that the wound site does not bear excessive pressure. Keeping the wound clean and dry is key.
2. 2 to 4 weeks: At this time, patients can usually start gradually increasing their weight-bearing walking. Rehabilitation exercises help restore muscle strength and joint flexibility. A physical therapist may guide some simple leg exercises to help accelerate recovery.
3. 4 to 6 weeks: With the relief of pain and swelling, dependence on crutches can be reduced, gradually transitioning to mild activity. At this point, the ability to walk normally will significantly improve, but it is still necessary to avoid vigorous exercise.
4. 6 to 8 weeks: Most people are able to recover to a near normal walking state during this stage. If no complications occur, the gait should be basically normal. For complete recovery, it is recommended to continue with physical therapy to strengthen muscles and improve balance.
It should be noted that the complete rehabilitation time varies from person to person and is related to an individual's overall health status, postoperative care, and the degree of rehabilitation exercise. Postoperative follow-up examination is important, and the rehabilitation plan should be adjusted according to the doctor's advice.
